Here's my story: I was on the metro with my children last June and we were surrounded by a bunch of noisy teenage girls. Unsurprisingly, in a short time one of them created a distraction while the others hand shot inside my bright red external money belt / waist pouch.
Unfortunately for the girls, we'd anticipated this and all the hand found were some snotty tissues from my kids. Our money and cards were safely stashed away inside a much thinner money belt inside my clothes.
Suggestion: keep your valuables discreetly and safely hidden while wearing an obvious valuables pouch that can act as a decoy. almost 8 years agoAnswered by Yuki
I agree with the above. Also, avoid having valuables in a backpack, as you cannot have your eyes on it all the time. Under clothes belts are the best for important items. You can also buy some very safe bags like: http://www.pacsafe.com/www/index.php I have found them very useful and reliable. almost 8 years ago
My experience in Paris tells me that if you wear a backpack you'd better wear it in front of you in crowded places. Several times there were attempts on my wife's backpack at the Underground Stations (Metropolitain) especially at the moment of passing turnstiles. over 7 years ago
Someone tried to scam me down near the Louvre by claiming I had dropped a gold wedding ring. When he tried to give it back to me he said he should be given a reward for being generous. I told him that I hadnt dropped a ring and if it was lost, then I was going to call the police - and with that, he scarpered. Same thing happened again a couple of days later with one guy offering me back "my ring" whilst a couple of his mates (I guess) came over to congratulate me and tell me how lucky I was. I guess they wanted a diversion before attempting to get my bag etc. Didnt work.
I found that the underground in any country can be difficult if you have a backpack and for that reason, I now have a very small day sack that I carry at the front of me with minimal items in it.
I only take out a small amount of money each day and never take passport, credit cards etc. If I do find something that I want to buy, I can always go back another day in a cab perhaps, direct to the shop. I have trousers that I like to wear when walking around in a new city and have had an extra pocket sewn into the inside front bit of them and this has a zip. I keep money in here and then top up my body belt which is under my clothes. I usually hop into a bathroom rather than rummaging in public with my hands down my pants!
Being aware of your surroundings, taking the usual precautions, not wearing anything too flash or too obvious...all the usual stuff. Touch wood, I have been very lucky and never had anything happen to me. over 7 years ago
